BHUBANESWAR: Indian benchmark indices closed in the red on Monday as escalating geopolitical tensions around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz weakened investor sentiment.

The Sensex slipped 171.72 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 77,369.11, while the Nifty 50 declined 32.95 points, or 0.14 per cent, to 24,219.05.

Investors remained cautious as Iran threatened possible action involving vessels and transit arrangements around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important passage for global energy shipments.

Sensex Nifty Today: Nifty Faces 24,300 Resistance

The Nifty’s technical setup remains closely linked to the 24,300 mark.

Market analysts said a sustained move above 24,300 could strengthen the index and open the possibility of an advance towards the 24,400 to 24,500 zone.

On the downside, 24,145 has emerged as an immediate support level, closely matching Monday’s session low.

A decisive move beyond either of these levels could provide traders with a clearer indication of the market’s next direction.

Sensex Nifty Today: PSU Banks Under Pressure

Selling was visible in several heavyweight stocks, contributing to the weak headline indices.

SBI Life Insurance and Bajaj Finance were among the notable Nifty laggards, while the broader banking space also faced pressure.

The Nifty PSU Bank index recorded the sharpest sectoral decline. In contrast, the Nifty Metal index outperformed other major sectoral indices and offered some support.

The broader market produced a mixed picture. The Nifty MidCap index gained 0.13 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index declined 0.26 per cent.

Iran Tensions Keep Indian Markets Volatile

The immediate market concern extends beyond the direct impact on Indian companies.

Any disruption around the Strait of Hormuz could affect the movement and pricing of crude oil and other energy commodities. Higher energy costs can increase inflationary pressure and raise input expenses for companies, potentially affecting profit expectations.

That risk is particularly important for an oil-importing economy such as India.

Market participants are therefore watching developments between the United States and Iran closely, especially ahead of the expected US sanctions announcement.

The next trading session could remain volatile as investors assess the scope of the sanctions and Iran’s possible response.

For Nifty traders, 24,300 on the upside and 24,145 on the downside are likely to remain important short-term reference levels. A sustained breakout or breakdown could determine the market’s immediate trend.
