Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty 50 fall for second consecutive session

The benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 closed lower on Wednesday, May 29, marking a second straight day of losses due to weak global market sentiment.

The Sensex ended the session at 81,312.32, falling by 239 points or 0.29%, while the Nifty 50 declined by 74 points or 0.30% to close at 24,752.45.

Among broader markets, the BSE Midcap index slipped 0.22%, whereas the Small-cap index defied the downward trend, gaining 0.50%. Leading the list of top gainers were HDFC Life Insurance Company (up 1.51%), Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) (up 1.27%), and Bajaj Finance (up 1.21%). Meanwhile, 34 stocks in the Nifty index closed in the red, with IndusInd Bank (down 1.93%), Apollo Hospitals (down 1.89%), and UltraTech Cement (down 1.82%) being the major laggards.

The Nifty Bank and Financial Services indices each edged up by 0.12%, while the PSU Bank index rose 0.97%. In contrast, the Private Bank index dropped slightly by 0.11%.

The Nifty FMCG index was the biggest loser among sectors, slipping 1.49%, whereas Nifty Media emerged as the top sectoral gainer, rising 1.04%.

Several stocks posted strong gains on the NSE, with 11 companies including Ravindra Energy, IFCI, Apollo Micro Systems, Vikas Lifecare, and Techno Electric & Engineering rallying over 10%. Additionally, 98 stocks such as BEL, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance, and HDFC Life Insurance hit their 52-week highs on the BSE.

Conversely, 32 stocks touched their 52-week lows, including Orchid Pharma, NIIT Learning Systems, and Chembond Chemicals.
