Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty End Higher Despite Trump Tariff Shock

Benchmark Indian equity indices Sensex and Nifty closed marginally higher on August 7, driven by a late rally in the IT sector, despite initial pressure due to fresh tariff announcements by US President Donald Trump.

After a sluggish start and an afternoon dip, the Sensex Nifty Market Closing August 7 showed strength in the final trading hour. The Sensex gained 79 points, settling at 80,623, while the Nifty rose 22 points to finish at 24,596.

IT Sector Lifts Indices as Broader Market Remains Mixed

In the broader market, BSE’s Mid-Cap index advanced 0.3%, whereas the Small-Cap index slipped 0.1%, indicating a mixed trend.

Out of the 30 Sensex-listed companies, 17 closed in the green. Key gainers included:

  • Tech Mahindra (+1.6%)
  • HCL Tech (+1.1%)
  • Eternal (+0.9%)

Top losers of the day were:

  • Adani Ports (-1.5%)
  • Trent (-1.1%)
  • Tata Motors (-0.8%)

Stock Market Today: IT and Healthcare Outperform, Telecom Drags

At the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), 11 of 21 sectoral indices ended positive. Among sectoral gainers:

  • Focused IT surged 0.9%
  • IT index rose 0.7%
  • Healthcare added 0.5%

Sectoral losers included:

  • Telecommunication (-0.6%)
  • Capital Goods (-0.4%)
  • Commodities and Power, both down over 0.3%

Despite global headwinds, including geopolitical trade tensions, the domestic markets ended on a resilient note, supported by tech and pharma stocks.
