Bhubaneswar: Tiger Bright Coffee, a premium Arabica coffee cultivated by tribal farmers in Odisha’s Koraput district, was gifted to guests at the BRICS Summit, putting the region’s coffee and tribal enterprise on an international platform.
The coffee is grown in the Eastern Ghats, particularly around the Nandapur and Machhkund areas, at elevations of about 920 to 950 metres. Its presence at the summit highlights the growing efforts to turn locally produced agricultural commodities into branded, value-added products.
For tribal farming communities in Koraput, the development represents more than the growth of a coffee brand. It connects cultivation with organised procurement, processing, branding and marketing, creating a wider value chain around the region’s coffee production.
Tiger Bright Coffee Showcases Koraput’s Tribal Enterprise
Koraput’s coffee-growing areas provide a natural environment for Arabica cultivation. The coffee plants grow under the shade of trees including mango, jackfruit and citrus.
The coffee cherries are handpicked when they reach peak ripeness before being processed. The Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation of Odisha Ltd. (TDCCOL) supports the process from procurement and drying to grading, processing and marketing.
The organised coffee initiative received a major boost with the launch of the Koraput Coffee brand on September 11, 2019. The objective was to establish a structured market for coffee produced by tribal farmers and increase the value generated within the local production chain.
Record Coffee Procurement Benefits Tribal Families
The expansion of the coffee ecosystem is reflected in procurement figures.
During the 2025–26 season, TDCCOL procured 102.54 metric tonnes of coffee fruit, compared with 34.68 MT in 2022–23 and 34.41 MT in 2024–25.
The 2025–26 procurement benefited around 360 tribal families involved in coffee cultivation.
TDCCOL has also introduced changes aimed at making payments and farmer identification more transparent. Instead of traditional cash transactions, payments have been transferred directly into farmers’ bank accounts, with ₹1.07 crore transferred through digital banking.
The initiative includes 71 tribal women farmers, while Smart Cards have been adopted by 45.7% of coffee growers to support identification and digital tracking across the supply chain.
Koraput Coffee Gains Recognition and Market Reach
Tiger Bright has developed a distinct flavour profile as a premium Arabica blend. Its tasting notes include tropical citrus flavours such as orange, lemon and sweet lime, along with caramel, chocolate and cocoa undertones.
The coffee is grown under natural shade and sun-dried on raised wooden beds. A combination of light, medium and dark roasts is used to maintain consistency in the finished product.
The brand has also received national recognition. Koraput Coffee won two Fine Cup Awards at KYK 2024 and secured fourth place in the Coffee Board’s Flavour of India Fine Cup 2024.
Koraput Coffee Cafés Expand the Brand
TDCCOL has established eight Koraput Coffee brand cafés across Odisha and Delhi, including a café at NALCO Damanjodi.
These outlets generated ₹1.64 crore in sales during FY 2023–24, providing another route for consumers to experience and purchase Koraput coffee.
The brand’s product range has also expanded beyond roasted coffee. Tiger Bright, roasted beans and instant coffee are among the offerings available to consumers, while more than 10,634 packs of Tiger Bright have been commercialised.
Tiger Bright’s BRICS Summit Presence Highlights Odisha
The appearance of Tiger Bright at the BRICS Summit gave Koraput’s tribal farmers an opportunity to showcase their produce to an international audience.
The summit brought together leaders, delegates and representatives from major emerging economies. Featuring a product grown and processed through a tribal-led value chain from Odisha provided a direct example of how regional agricultural products can reach high-profile markets.
The development also reflects a broader shift in tribal livelihood programmes—from selling raw agricultural commodities towards processing, branding, quality improvement and stronger market access.
By building a value chain around Koraput’s indigenous coffee, Tiger Bright is helping connect tribal farmers with consumers beyond Odisha while giving the region’s coffee a stronger identity in domestic and international markets.
