Weapons Box Office: Zach Cregger’s Low-Budget Horror Tops Global Charts with $70M Opening Weekend
Weapons box office 2025: Horror continues its dominance in 2025, and the latest proof is Zach Cregger’s spine-chilling thriller Weapons. The film has not only earned glowing critical acclaim but also shattered box office expectations worldwide. With a modest $38 million budget, Weapons has already reached its break-even point during its first three days in theatres.
In North America alone, Weapons collected a powerful $42.5 million over its opening weekend, easily claiming the top spot. It outperformed Lindsay Lohan’s comedy Freakier Friday, which brought in $29 million domestically. The success didn’t stop there—international audiences embraced Weapons in a big way, contributing $28 million from overseas markets. This pushed its global opening weekend total to an impressive $70 million, making it the #1 film worldwide.
Weapons box office 2025 Beats Marvel’s Fantastic Four
What makes this feat even more remarkable is that Weapons surpassed massive competitors like Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the Disney comedy Freakier Friday. Both those titles earned between $30 million and $35 million internationally—well behind Weapons’ overseas tally.
Industry experts say the film’s success owes much to its viral marketing campaign and social media buzz. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told AP: “The top two films could not be more different, and that’s what makes this weekend so appealing for moviegoers. Both are perfectly tailored for their audiences to react in real time over the weekend to these films and then post on social media.”
About Weapons
Directed by Zach Cregger, Weapons is set in the quiet town of Maybrook, where a shocking mystery unfolds—17 teenagers vanish from their homes at exactly 2:17 a.m., leaving their parents and the community in a state of panic. The story delves into themes of trauma, paranoia, and even existential humour, creating a layered horror experience.
The film has received strong critical reception, holding a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Its debut ranks just behind other 2025 horror hits like Final Destination: Bloodlines and Sinners, further proving that horror is having a landmark year at the global box office.
