World Elephant Day 2025: Focus on Human-Elephant Conflict Mitigation in Coimbatore

Published on

World Elephant Day 2025 is being observed today, August 12, to celebrate one of the most intelligent and emotionally aware animals — the elephant. The annual observance aims to raise awareness about protecting these gentle giants, their rapidly shrinking habitats, and their populations threatened by poaching and human-wildlife conflict.

The first World Elephant Day was launched on August 12, 2012, by Thailand’s Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims to highlight the plight of Asian and African elephants. The day has since evolved into a global movement promoting habitat protection, anti-poaching efforts, and better care for captive elephants.

World Elephant Day 2025: THEME

This year’s theme — Mitigation of Human-Elephant Conflict — will be the focus of celebrations organised in Coimbatore by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). The event aims to address challenges in conserving wild elephants while ensuring community safety.

India is home to nearly 60% of the global wild elephant population, with 33 Elephant Reserves and 150 identified Elephant Corridors. Elephants hold the title of National Heritage Animal, symbolising their deep cultural and ecological significance.
