11th National Handloom Day Celebrated with Expo and ‘Haat on Wheels’ in New Delhi
New Delhi: The 11th National Handloom Day was celebrated today with vibrant displays of India’s textile heritage, as the Ministry of Textiles, in collaboration with the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC), inaugurated an Exclusive Handloom Expo and the innovative “Haat on Wheels” initiative at Janpath, New Delhi.
The event was inaugurated by Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, along with Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita, who emphasized the central government’s ongoing commitment to preserve and promote India’s rich handloom tradition.
National Handloom Day 2025 Highlights India’s Weaving Legacy
Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Giriraj Singh said that handlooms are a powerful emblem of India’s cultural identity, while also serving as a vital economic engine for rural communities. He emphasized that the government remains focused on supporting weavers, expanding their market access, and boosting sustainable livelihoods.
The Minister reiterated that this year’s National Handloom Day 2025 marks a renewed effort to revitalize the handloom sector, reinforcing policies that benefit artisans and enable the sector to flourish in a modern economy.
The Handloom Expo, which will remain open to the public until August 10, features:
- Participation from master weavers representing various Indian states
- Sale of region-specific handloom products
- 116 unique weaves on display
- Live weaving demonstrations, allowing visitors, students, and craft enthusiasts to witness the intricacies of traditional Indian weaving techniques
The newly launched Haat on Wheels initiative adds mobility to handloom retail, enabling the weavers’ products to reach a wider audience across urban and semi-urban regions.
