New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in the national capital tomorrow, marking the birth centenary of Professor M.S. Swaminathan, the architect of India’s Green Revolution and a global icon in agricultural science.

Organised by the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the three-day conference will run from Thursday to Saturday.

M.S. Swaminathan Centenary Conference to Focus on Sustainable Agriculture

During the event, PM Modi will unveil a commemorative coin and postage stamp issued by the Government of India, celebrating Prof. Swaminathan’s enduring contributions to food security and agricultural transformation.

Dr. M.L. Jat, Director General of ICAR, noted in a media briefing that Prof. Swaminathan was instrumental in transforming India from a food-deficient country to a food-surplus nation, laying the foundation for sustainable agricultural growth.

Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chairperson of MSSRF and daughter of Prof. Swaminathan, emphasized the global importance of this conference, calling it a major step in reimagining the future of agriculture in a world facing climate, food, and livelihood crises.

Theme and Goals: Evergreen Revolution and Bio Happiness

The conference is themed “Evergreen Revolution – The Pathway to Bio Happiness”, in recognition of Prof. Swaminathan’s lifelong commitment to sustainable and equitable development.

Key focus areas of the international forum include:

  • Conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources
  • Climate-resilient and nutrition-sensitive agriculture
  • Inclusive, technology-driven livelihood models
  • Youth, women, and community engagement in development

The M.S. Swaminathan Centenary Conference is expected to bring together scientists, development professionals, policymakers, and grassroots stakeholders to collectively push forward the vision of sustainable agricultural development and global food security.
