13 Republican Lawmakers Flip on Trump’s Mega Bill After Elon Musk’s Criticism

At least 13 House Republicans who previously supported former President Donald Trump’s massive domestic policy bill are now urging the Senate to revise key provisions, particularly those related to clean energy tax credits. The bill, which passed the House last month, is now under Senate scrutiny.

The lawmakers, led by Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-Va.), expressed “deep concern” over parts of the bill that aggressively phase down tax incentives from the 2022 climate law and impose new supply chain requirements. These changes, they argue, could threaten thousands of jobs and billions in investments, according to a report by Politico.

GOP Lawmakers Appeal to Senate Leaders

In a letter addressed to Senate Majority Whip John Thune and Senate Finance Chair Mike Crapo, the lawmakers—including Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Juan Ciscomani (Ariz.), and Andrew Garbarino (N.Y.)—warned that the current language in the bill could lead to significant economic losses.

“We believe the Senate now has a critical opportunity to restore common sense and deliver a truly pro-energy growth final bill,” the letter stated. “This includes protecting taxpayers while also unleashing the potential of U.S. energy producers, manufacturers, and workers.”

$14 Billion in Energy Projects Already Cancelled or Delayed

The lawmakers pointed to troubling figures: since January, over $14 billion in energy projects have either been cancelled or delayed, with $4.5 billion lost in April alone.

A major concern is a clause that cancels tax breaks for projects not started within 60 days of the bill’s implementation, which could accelerate the wave of cancellations.

“Without a clear signal from Congress encouraging continued investments and offering business certainty… project cancellations will continue to snowball,” the letter warned.

Elon Musk Slams Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill”

The shift among Republicans comes just days after Elon Musk publicly denounced the bill on X (formerly Twitter). Calling it a “disgusting abomination”, Musk lashed out at the sweeping spending cuts and tax breaks, which he claims are loaded with “pork” and corporate favors.

“Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it,” Musk posted. He also hinted at future political consequences for GOP lawmakers, further intensifying tensions between the tech mogul and the former president.

Tensions Between Trump and Musk Escalate

This development marks a growing rift between two of the most influential figures in the Republican political ecosystem. Trump and Musk have exchanged increasingly sharp public jabs, with Trump recently stating that Musk is “done” and no longer a part of his advisory circle.

Outlook: Senate May Hold the Final Say

As Senate Republicans negotiate the final form of the bill—focused on tax cuts, clean energy, and border security—it remains to be seen how Musk’s opposition and the House Republicans’ reversal will impact its fate.

For now, the GOP appears divided, and business uncertainty continues to mount in the clean energy sector.
