Published on

Bhubaneswar, June 7, 2025: Odisha has recorded 38 new Covid-19 cases, raising concern among public health officials ahead of the upcoming Rath Yatra. Out of 755 samples tested, 38 were found positive, with 9 recoveries reported so far. The active caseload now stands at 29.

Odisha Intensifies Covid Management Measures

In response, the state government has implemented enhanced Covid surveillance and response measures. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has also issued advisories to all states, urging them to bolster readiness and ensure availability of critical healthcare infrastructure, including oxygen cylinders, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines.

Focus on SARI and ILI Surveillance

The state and district surveillance units are closely monitoring cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). According to new protocols:

  • 100% of SARI cases and
  • 50% of ILI cases
    will be tested for Covid-19.
All positive samples from SARI patients will undergo genome sequencing to track possible mutations or new variants of the virus.

Rath Yatra Restrictions Announced Amid Health Concerns

In view of the current situation, authorities have issued an advisory discouraging public attendance during the Rath Yatra chariot pulling event. Vulnerable groups, including:

  • People with cold or flu symptoms,
  • Elderly citizens, and
  • Individuals with co-morbid conditions
have been specifically barred from participating in the chariot pulling procession to prevent potential super-spreader events.

Public Urged to Follow Precautionary Measures

Officials have appealed to the public to remain cautious, wear masks, and avoid large gatherings, especially as the festival season approaches. Testing, tracking, and genome surveillance will remain critical tools in the state’s Covid-19 strategy moving forward.
