4 Dead, 6 Injured as Bridge Collapses Over Indrayani River in Pune’s Kundmala

Published on

In a heartbreaking incident in Maharashtra, an old iron bridge over the Indrayani River in Kundmala, located in Pune’s Maval region, collapsed on Sunday, leading to the confirmed deaths of four individuals. Preliminary reports suggest that several tourists may have fallen into the river, with fears of more casualties.

The tragic collapse occurred during peak tourist activity, as Kundmala is a popular monsoon destination known for its scenic beauty and flowing river. With Sunday being a public holiday, the area saw a heavy footfall, possibly overloading the decades-old structure.

Authorities confirmed that six people sustained serious injuries, while 38 others have been rescued so far. Swift response teams from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad police, the PMRDA fire department, and two units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are carrying out rescue operations.

The Maharashtra state government has announced ₹5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased.

Top state leaders, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar—who is also the Guardian Minister of Pune—and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, have expressed deep grief over the incident. Mr. Ajit Pawar assured the public that a detailed investigation will be conducted, and those found responsible for the collapse will face strict action.
