Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked During Public Meeting; Accused Arrested for Attempted Murder

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked on Wednesday morning during a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at her Civil Lines Camp Office, located next to her official residence. The incident occurred around 8:30 AM, barely half an hour after the public interaction began.

The attacker, identified as 41-year-old Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakriya from Rajkot, Gujarat, allegedly posed as a complainant and approached Gupta with some papers before suddenly launching the assault.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked at Camp Office

According to Delhi Police, Sakriya was immediately overpowered by security personnel and arrested on the spot. An FIR was filed under BNS sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from duty), and 221 (obstructing public servant).

In the official complaint, an Assistant Sub-Inspector from the CM’s security detail stated that the accused attacked Gupta, causing her to fall headfirst, which posed a serious threat to her life. The Chief Minister was then escorted inside the office while the accused was beaten by some people present.

Accused’s Background and Motive

Sakriya’s family in Rajkot told reporters that he was mentally unstable and deeply upset about the Supreme Court’s recent order on relocating stray dogs in Delhi-NCR. His mother claimed he had a history of violent behavior at home and was not under any medical treatment.

Police investigations revealed that Sakriya had arrived in Delhi after visiting Ujjain for temple prayers. Upon seeing Gupta’s posters and a social media reel where she spoke about stray dogs, he allegedly decided to target her.

Rajkot police confirmed that he had five prior cases registered against him between 2017 and 2024, including charges of voluntarily causing hurt, drunken misconduct, and criminal intimidation.

Rekha Gupta Reacts After Attack

In her first statement after the incident, CM Rekha Gupta posted on X, saying:
“The attack on me during this morning’s public hearing was not just an attack on me but an attempt to weaken our resolve to serve Delhi. I was in shock initially but now I am better. Such acts can never break my spirit. I will continue to work with even more dedication.”

Doctors conducted her medical examination at her residence, while police collected CCTV footage, photographs, and videos from the accused’s mobile phone. Visuals also emerged of Sakriya conducting reconnaissance near Gupta’s home in Shalimar Bagh.

Political Leaders Condemn Attack

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, who met the CM, described the incident as a sudden and shocking assault during her interaction with the public. Cabinet colleague Kapil Mishra termed it a “serious and horrifying attack” and hinted at a possible conspiracy, citing evidence of surveillance from the accused’s phone.

Education Minister Atishi also condemned the incident, stating that while disagreement and protest are part of democracy, violence has no place in it.

This is not the first time a Delhi Chief Minister has been attacked. In the past, former CM Sheila Dikshit faced a slipper attack in 2012, while Arvind Kejriwal was slapped multiple times during public rallies.
