Elon Musk Says Bill Gates ‘Not Strong in the Sciences,’ Recalls Clash Over Tesla’s Electric Trucks

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has taken another swipe at Bill Gates, saying that the Microsoft co-founder, despite creating one of the world’s largest technology companies, is “not strong in the sciences.”

During a recent episode of the All-In Podcast, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO discussed his past interactions with Gates, revealing their sharp differences over science, innovation, and technology.

Elon Musk Criticizes Bill Gates’ Scientific Understanding

“You’d think that someone like Bill Gates, who clearly started a technology company that’s one of the biggest companies in the world — Microsoft — would be really quite strong in the sciences,” Musk said on the podcast. “But actually, my direct conversations with him have shown he is not strong in the sciences.”

The remark adds a new chapter to the long-standing tensions between the two billionaires, who have frequently disagreed over issues like electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and climate philanthropy.

Musk Recalls Gates’ Skepticism About Tesla Semi Trucks

Musk also recounted a past encounter where Gates questioned the feasibility of Tesla’s long-range electric semi-trucks. “He came to visit me at the Tesla Gigafactory in Austin and was telling me that it’s impossible to have a long-range semi-truck,” Musk said.

“I was like, well, but we literally have them. Pepsi is using them right now. You can drive them yourself or send someone you trust to test it,” Musk added, referring to PepsiCo’s fleet of Tesla Semis already operating in the U.S.

Musk Claims Gates Refused to Believe Tesla’s Achievements

According to Musk, Gates dismissed his claims even after being presented with evidence. “He’s like, ‘No, no, it doesn’t work.’ And I’m like, ‘Um, okay.’ I’m kind of stuck there,” Musk said, recalling the awkward exchange.

The Tesla chief implied that Gates’ skepticism reflected a broader lack of understanding of advanced energy technologies.

A History of Public Disagreements Between Musk and Gates

Musk and Gates have publicly sparred several times in recent years. Gates has previously expressed doubts about the practicality of large electric vehicles like semi-trucks and airplanes, while Musk has accused Gates of betting against Tesla by shorting its stock.
