Botswana Hands Over 8 Cheetahs to India During President Droupadi Murmu’s Visit

Published on

In a historic step toward wildlife conservation, Botswana officially handed over eight cheetahs to India during President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit to the African nation. The symbolic ceremony took place at the Mokolodi Nature Reserve, marking a milestone in the ongoing Botswana cheetahs to India initiative.

Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko, alongside President Murmu and senior wildlife officials from both nations, attended the handover ceremony. The eight cheetahs—both adults and sub-adults—were transported from Ghanzi in the Kalahari desert, with two placed in a quarantine enclosure as part of the formal proceedings.

Botswana Cheetahs to India: A Boost for Project Cheetah

Speaking at the event, President Murmu stated, “These cheetahs will join their brothers and sisters in India’s Kuno National Park, helping us to restore the species in its historical habitat.” President Boko praised the collaboration, saying Botswana was proud to support efforts to rebuild India’s cheetah population.

India’s Expanding Conservation Efforts

All eight cheetahs will remain under quarantine in Botswana before being flown to India in the coming weeks. They will be housed in Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh, as part of Project Cheetah, India’s ambitious reintroduction programme that began in 2022.

Since its inception, the initiative has seen the arrival of eight cheetahs from Namibia and twelve from South Africa, resulting in a current total of 27 cheetahs, including 16 born in India. Despite challenges and 19 deaths, 26 cubs have been successfully born, signaling steady progress.

President Murmu’s Landmark Visit to Botswana

This handover coincided with President Murmu’s three-day state visit to Botswana from November 11–13, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian head of state to the country. The visit followed her engagements in Angola and underscored India’s growing commitment to Africa and the Global South.

Strengthening Bilateral and Environmental Ties

During her stay, President Murmu addressed the Botswana National Assembly, engaged in high-level discussions, and visited cultural landmarks. Both nations reaffirmed cooperation in trade, energy, health, defence, and technology.

The Botswana cheetahs to India initiative stands as a shining example of this growing partnership, reflecting a shared vision for ecological balance and global biodiversity preservation.
