Puri: The sacred Banakalagi ritual will be performed at the Jagannath Temple on Wednesday evening, prompting a temporary suspension of darshan for devotees. The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) announced that the temple will remain closed to the public from 6 pm to 10 pm to facilitate the important ceremonial process.
The ritual is one of the significant traditions observed at the 12th-century shrine and is conducted periodically as part of the temple’s age-old customs.
Banakalagi Ritual to Suspend Darshan for Four Hours
According to the public notice issued by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, devotees will not be allowed to enter the temple premises for darshan during the four-hour period.
Temple authorities have urged pilgrims and visitors to plan their visits accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
The restriction is being imposed to ensure the smooth conduct of the sacred ritual inside the sanctum.
What Is the Banakalagi Ritual?
Banakalagi, also known as Srimukha Sringara, is a special ceremonial practice during which the faces of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are adorned and coloured afresh.
Natural pigments and traditional materials are used by designated temple servitors to restore and beautify the facial features of the sibling deities.
The ritual holds deep religious significance as it symbolizes renewal, divine beauty and reverence toward the deities.
Why Banakalagi Is Important for Devotees
The ceremony is considered an integral part of the temple’s ritualistic traditions and reflects centuries-old customs preserved at the Jagannath Temple.
While devotees will temporarily miss darshan during the ritual, the completion of Banakalagi is regarded as an auspicious occasion, enhancing the spiritual significance of worship at the shrine.
Following the completion of the ritual at 10 pm, regular darshan for devotees is expected to resume as per the temple schedule.
