  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • The US wants to expand civil nuclear cooperation with India.
  • Private sector participation is expected to play a key role in future projects.
  • The partnership is linked to broader collaboration in strategic technologies and energy security.

New Delhi: The US India civil nuclear cooperation partnership is set for a significant expansion, with Washington expressing strong interest in supporting India’s growing energy needs through private sector-led nuclear projects. Speaking at the Vision India 2047 CITI 2026 event in Mumbai, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the two countries are taking their civil nuclear partnership to “new levels” and identified the sector as a major area of growth in the coming years.

The development comes as India seeks reliable, clean and large-scale energy sources to power its rapidly expanding economy.

US India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Enters New Phase

Gor said the US mission recently hosted representatives from the US Nuclear Energy Institute in India to explore how private sector innovation and expertise can contribute to India’s nuclear power ambitions.

The focus is on creating a robust civil nuclear ecosystem capable of supporting India’s future electricity demand while maintaining high standards of safety and security.

According to the ambassador, long-term cooperation between the two countries could extend over several decades, creating opportunities for businesses, investors and technology providers on both sides.

Why Nuclear Energy Is Becoming More Important

India’s energy consumption is expected to rise significantly as industrial growth, urbanisation and digital infrastructure expansion accelerate.

While renewable energy remains a key pillar of the country’s energy transition, nuclear power offers a stable source of low-carbon electricity that can complement solar and wind generation.

The US sees nuclear collaboration as an important component of India’s broader energy security strategy and a way to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Strategic Technologies Driving the Partnership

The civil nuclear push is also connected to the broader TRUST Initiative launched in 2025, which focuses on strategic sectors such as:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Semiconductors
  • Quantum Computing
  • Critical Minerals
  • Advanced Energy Technologies

Gor highlighted the recently signed US-India Critical Minerals Framework, emphasizing efforts to build trusted supply chains and reduce dependence on single-source suppliers.

Long-Term Investment and Business Opportunities

The ambassador stressed that expanding nuclear cooperation will require substantial investment from financial institutions and private companies.

He described the initiative as a mutually beneficial opportunity that can create jobs, encourage innovation and strengthen economic growth in both countries.

Gor also pointed to continued high-level engagement between New Delhi and Washington as evidence of the strategic importance both governments place on the relationship.

With India’s power requirements expected to increase sharply over the next two decades, civil nuclear cooperation is emerging as a key pillar of the India-US partnership, combining energy security, technological collaboration and long-term economic development.
