NEW DELHI: The India Japan Annual Summit 2026 will take centre stage in New Delhi on Thursday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosts Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for the 16th Annual Summit. The high-level meeting is expected to review the full spectrum of bilateral relations while exploring new avenues for cooperation in strategic, economic and regional affairs.

Prime Minister Takaichi, who arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a three-day official visit, will receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan before holding summit-level talks with Prime Minister Modi.

India Japan Annual Summit 2026 to Focus on Strategic and Economic Cooperation

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the summit will reinforce the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two countries. Discussions are expected to cover defence cooperation, economic security, investment, innovation and regional developments.

Key issues expected to be discussed include:

  • Strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
  • Expanding cooperation in economic security and resilient supply chains.
  • Enhancing investment, innovation and business collaboration.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said before departing Tokyo that she hopes to achieve concrete progress in three priority areas: deepening strategic ties, promoting economic security and expanding business cooperation between the two nations.

A Japan-India Joint Economic Forum, involving representatives from more than 150 Japanese companies and business organisations, is also scheduled during the visit to strengthen commercial engagement.

India and Japan have steadily expanded cooperation across defence, infrastructure, technology, trade and connectivity over the past decade. The summit comes at a time when both countries are placing greater emphasis on resilient supply chains, trusted technology partnerships and regional security.
