Chennai: A planned public appearance by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in London was cancelled after the Metropolitan Police raised concerns over crowd safety.

Hundreds of supporters had gathered near The Shard, hoping to see Vijay during his UK visit. Some supporters had reportedly been waiting for hours before the programme was called off.

Why Was Vijay’s London Event Cancelled?

The planned meeting with members of the Tamil community could not go ahead after concerns were raised over public safety and the required permission for the programme.

A member of Vijay’s team announced the cancellation through a loudspeaker, citing safety concerns and the lack of permission for the gathering.

The cancellation left several supporters disappointed after they had gathered to catch a glimpse of the Chief Minister.

Supporters Asked Not to Gather at Hotel

Following the cancellation, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) IT Wing appealed to supporters not to wait outside his hotel or along his expected travel routes.

The appeal was made with reference to the public-safety concerns raised by London Metropolitan Police.

Vijay in London for Tamil Nadu Investment Drive

Vijay is visiting the UK as part of a Tamil Nadu government delegation focused on attracting investments to the state.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, multiple memoranda of understanding signed during the visit involve proposed investments of around ₹12,300 crore. The projects are expected to generate more than 9,400 high-value jobs, according to officials.

The investment drive is aimed at strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position in advanced manufacturing and technology.

Major Investment Commitments Announced

The reported investment commitments include a major proposal from Samvardhana Motherson International, along with projects involving other companies in manufacturing, engineering and technology.

The agreements represent investment commitments rather than completed investments, with individual projects subject to their respective implementation processes.

Vijay Expected to Return to India on Wednesday

Vijay is scheduled to conclude his UK visit and return to India on Wednesday.

The London event cancellation became a notable part of his overseas visit after supporters gathered in large numbers and police raised concerns about managing the crowd safely.

The visit has otherwise focused on investment outreach and discussions aimed at attracting new business and technology projects to Tamil Nadu.
