Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday announced recruitment to 14,454 government posts within six to eight months, along with new financial assistance for unmarried women pursuing higher education.
The decisions were announced after a state Cabinet meeting at the state secretariat. The government also approved the Bhagini Nivedita Scheme, under which eligible beneficiaries will receive a total of ₹50,000 over three years.
The Cabinet further approved higher monthly remuneration for Karmabandhus and an increase in the food allowance for SC and ST students staying in government hostels.
14,454 Government Vacancies Approved
Adhikari said the newly approved vacancies would be filled through the Public Service Commission and the State Police Recruitment Board.
The posts will be spread across several departments, including forests, fire services, prisons, home and hill affairs.
The Chief Minister said the government had promised to provide one lakh government jobs and was moving towards that target. He also said the PSC was working at full strength to complete pending recruitment processes.
According to Adhikari, appointment-related formalities for around 12,000 police posts will begin on October 11. Around 5,000 candidates are expected to receive appointment letters at a programme on the same day.
Bhagini Nivedita Scheme to Provide ₹50,000
The Cabinet approved the Bhagini Nivedita Scheme to provide financial assistance to unmarried women pursuing higher education.
Under the scheme, beneficiaries will receive:
- ₹17,000 in the first year
- ₹17,000 in the second year
- ₹16,000 in the third year
The total assistance will therefore amount to ₹50,000 over three years.
Adhikari said the scheme will be implemented from January next year.
Karmabandhu Remuneration Increased
The monthly remuneration of Karmabandhus, who work as contractual sanitation support staff under the land and land revenue department, has been increased from ₹5,000 to ₹8,000.
The revised remuneration will take effect from this month.
The government has also increased the monthly food allowance for SC and ST students staying in government hostels from ₹1,800 to ₹3,300.
Emergency Police Number 112 to Launch
Adhikari announced that the state’s police emergency response number 112 will be launched on October 10, coinciding with Mahalaya.
On the same occasion, 400 vehicles and 450 motorcycles will be handed over to various police stations at a programme at the Brigade Parade Ground.
The measures are intended to strengthen emergency response and police mobility across the state.
3,000-Drone Show Planned for Mahalaya
The government has also planned a major cultural programme at Eden Gardens on October 10 to mark Mahalaya.
A special drone show involving around 3,000 drones is expected to be one of the main attractions. Around 45,000 people are expected to attend the event, and the Governor has also been invited.
Adhikari said several government programmes would begin after Mahalaya and continue through the festive period.
Bijaya Sammilani on October 26
A special Bijaya Sammilani for Durga Puja committees will be held on October 26, according to the Chief Minister.
Instead of conventional catering, the event will feature food stalls showcasing popular dishes from different districts of West Bengal.
The announcements combine recruitment, welfare measures, police initiatives and festive programmes as the state prepares for the Durga Puja period.
