  • Coastal Odisha is seeing temperatures 3°C to 4°C above normal, along with high humidity.
  • IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for lightning, thunderstorms and gusty winds in several districts until October 9 morning.

Bhubaneswar/Puri: October weather in Odisha is showing a sharp contrast between persistent heat along the coast and early signs of seasonal change in parts of the interior.

Puri recorded a maximum temperature of 36.6°C on October 5, according to the weather data cited from records dating back to 1896. The reading is the second-highest temperature recorded in the coastal city during October and comes after a maximum of 36.3°C on October 4, 2024.

Coastal Odisha continues to face intense heat

Coastal districts and urban centres have continued to experience high daytime temperatures, with maximum temperatures remaining around 3°C to 4°C above normal in several coastal areas.

High humidity has added to the discomfort, making daytime conditions feel more oppressive for residents.

Puri’s latest temperature reading highlights the unusual warmth being experienced along the coast despite the seasonal transition expected during October.

Interior districts show signs of seasonal change

The weather pattern is different in parts of western and southern Odisha.

Several interior areas have reported light morning fog and a gradual fall in nighttime temperatures. These conditions indicate the beginning of a seasonal shift, although daytime temperatures remain elevated in many parts of the state.

According to Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the withdrawal line of the Southwest Monsoon remains stationary.

The withdrawal line is currently passing through Supaul, Ranchi, Raipur, Bramhapuri, Parbhani and Baramati.

An atmospheric trough extends from southeast Uttar Pradesh to the North Bay of Bengal. An active cyclonic circulation is also present over south coastal Odisha and the adjoining Bay of Bengal.

Temperatures may fall from Friday

Dr. Mohanty said daytime maximum temperatures are unlikely to change significantly over the next two to three days.

However, temperatures are expected to fall by 2°C to 3°C from Friday.

Nighttime temperatures across Odisha are expected to remain largely stable over the next six to seven days.

IMD issues Yellow Warning for thunderstorms

The India Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Warning for lightning, thunderstorms and gusty winds in several districts until the morning of October 9.

Gusty winds may reach speeds of 30 to 40 km/h during the warned period.

The districts covered by the warning are:

  • Baleshwar
  • Bhadrak
  • Jajpur
  • Kendrapada
  • Jagatsinghpur
  • Kataka
  • Sundargarh
  • Keonjhar
  • Mayurbhanj
  • Khordha
  • Puri
  • Ganjam
  • Gajapati
  • Rayagada
  • Koraput
  • Malkangiri

Residents in the affected districts should remain alert to sudden thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds, particularly during periods of unstable weather.

Odisha weather outlook

The coming days are expected to bring limited relief from the persistent daytime heat, with a possible 2°C to 3°C decline in maximum temperatures from Friday.

At the same time, the combination of the cyclonic circulation, atmospheric trough and changing monsoon pattern could continue to produce regional variations in weather across Odisha.

For coastal residents, high humidity and above-normal temperatures remain the main concern, while interior districts are beginning to experience cooler nights and light morning fog.
