India and Cyprus Reaffirm Commitment to Counter Terrorism, Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Published on

India and Cyprus have issued a strong joint declaration condemning terrorism and violent extremism in all forms, following high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia today. The two nations reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to a comprehensive and coordinated global fight against terrorism, calling for swift action to dismantle terror networks and hold perpetrators accountable.

Strong Message Against Terrorism and Cross-Border Extremism

In their declaration, both leaders emphasized the urgency of countering hybrid threats, calling for the elimination of terror financing, dismantling of safe havens, and bringing terrorists to justice. Cyprus extended full solidarity with India in its fight against cross-border terrorism, especially in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attacks, which both sides strongly condemned.

India and Cyprus urged the expeditious adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) under the UN framework. The leaders also called for firm action against UN and EU-designated terrorist groups, proxy networks, sponsors, and facilitators of terrorism.

Defence, Cybersecurity, and Maritime Cooperation on the Agenda

The two countries agreed to deepen defence and security collaboration, focusing on cybersecurity, emerging technologies, and partnerships between defence industries. They also explored cooperation in the maritime domain, highlighting mutual interests in regional stability and sea-based trade routes.

Acknowledging the impact of ongoing global crises, both leaders pledged enhanced cooperation in emergency preparedness and coordinated crisis response. Discussions also addressed international developments, including the situations in the Middle East and Ukraine.

IMEC Recognised as Key Strategic Initiative

Both leaders lauded the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a transformative initiative for peace, economic integration, and sustainable development. They underscored its potential to enhance connectivity and cooperation from the Indian subcontinent to Europe, with Cyprus playing a vital strategic role.

Expanding Economic, Scientific, and Technological Ties

Recognising growing strategic complementarity, the two nations committed to strengthening economic ties through increased trade, investment, and collaboration in science, research, and innovation. The declaration signals a new chapter in India-Cyprus relations with a shared vision for regional and global stability.
