New Gold Ornaments Planned for Lord Jagannath’s Suna Besha Next Year
In a spiritually significant move, Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan announced that new gold ornaments will be prepared for Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra for the next year’s Suna Besha ritual. The initiative, supported by the Odisha government, is expected to involve public participation through gold donations from devotees.
New Ornaments for a Sacred Tradition
The proposal was formally discussed during a recent Chhatisa Nijoga meeting—the apex body of temple servitors—held in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Servitors noted that some of the existing ornaments are damaged, worn out, or unaccounted for, prompting the need for a fresh set.
Law Minister Harichandan said, “If Lord Jagannath wills, this proposal will come to life. Devotees’ sentiment is clear. Now, it is our responsibility to act in accordance with divine will and their devotion.”
Call for Devotee Participation
To make this divine endeavour inclusive, the government is encouraging devotees to contribute gold donations, turning it into a collective spiritual offering for the Lord’s service. The Suna Besha ritual, where the deities are adorned in gold atop their Rath Yatra chariots, is one of the most visually and spiritually significant events for Jagannath devotees across the globe.

Taking a swipe at the previous administration, the Law Minister criticised their failure to open and repair the Ratna Bhandar (the temple’s treasury). “They couldn’t even open the Ratna Bhandar when it was in a dilapidated condition. We have not only opened it but also initiated repairs,” he said. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is currently in the process of handing it back to the temple administration.
Harichandan reiterated that no change to temple traditions would be made without aligning with the divine will and established rituals. The announcement of new ornaments has been met with devotion and enthusiasm by temple servitors and the wider Jagannath community.
The upcoming Suna Besha, known for its divine grandeur, is poised to become even more special as preparations for the new adornments begin.
