Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Threatens India Over Indus Waters Treaty Suspension

In a fresh escalation over the Indus Waters Treaty tensions, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday warned India that it would not be allowed to take “even one drop” of water belonging to Pakistan. His statement comes after India placed the 1960 treaty in “abeyance” on April 23, a day after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.

Sharif said at a ceremony in Islamabad, “If you threaten to hold our water, keep in mind you cannot snatch even one drop of Pakistan’s.” He warned that India would be “taught such a lesson” if it attempted such an act.

Bilawal Bhutto and Mithun Chakraborty’s War of Words

The prime minister’s warning came a day after former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari claimed that the suspension of the treaty was an attack on the Indus Valley Civilisation, warning that Pakistan would not back down if forced into war.

BJP leader and actor Mithun Chakraborty fired back, saying India would respond with BrahMos missiles. In a bizarre addition, he said a dam would be built and “140 crore Indians would relieve themselves there before the water is unleashed” on Pakistan. He clarified his comments were directed at Pakistan’s leadership, not its people.

Asim Munir’s Threat Deepens Indus Waters Treaty Tensions

Pakistani Army chief General Asim Munir, addressing the diaspora in Tampa, Florida, vowed to destroy any dam India builds to cut off water flow. “The Indus River is not the Indians’ family property,” he declared, adding that Pakistan had resources to undo Indian plans.

India’s Response to Nuclear Threat

India’s Ministry of External Affairs condemned Munir’s nuclear threat, saying it confirmed concerns over Pakistan’s military control and its ties to terror groups. “Nuclear sabre-rattling is Pakistan’s stock-in-trade,” the MEA stated, emphasising that India will not give in to nuclear blackmail.

Operation Sindoor and Ceasefire

Following the Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, striking terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. After four days of intense cross-border missile and drone exchanges, both sides agreed to halt hostilities on May 10.
