Key Selection Calls Await as India Prepare for Asia Cup Squad Announcement Ahead of T20 World Cup

India’s preparations for the men’s T20 World Cup early next year will officially begin with the Asia Cup in the UAE, starting on September 9. The highly anticipated Asia Cup squad announcement India is expected on Tuesday, when chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his panel reveal the names that will give the first clear indication of India’s core plan and strategy for World Cup defence.

The selection committee faces several key decisions, especially in the top order and middle order, where a number of proven names are vying for limited spots following strong domestic and international performances in recent months.

Asia Cup Squad Announcement India – Gill, Jaiswal or Samson for Opening Slot

Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have opened in India’s last 12 T20Is and performed well, with Abhishek in particularly excellent form. He smashed 279 runs at a strike rate of 219.68 in the recent T20I series against England, also contributing with his left-arm spin. Samson, on the other hand, has been inconsistent after a strong run against South Africa and Bangladesh.

Selectors must now decide whether to persist with the pairing or consider return of either Shubman Gill or Yashasvi Jaiswal. Gill, who captained India in Zimbabwe and served as vice-captain in Sri Lanka, remains a strong option, while Jaiswal was the back-up opener during last year’s T20 World Cup.

Middle Order Headaches and Iyer vs Tilak Debate

The middle order features several locked-in contenders – Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel – leaving limited room for others. At No.3, the biggest decision could be between Tilak Varma and Shreyas Iyer. Tilak impressed in South Africa but had a modest IPL season. Shreyas, by contrast, was superb in IPL 2025, registering 600+ runs at a strike rate of 175.07 and showing improved spin-hitting.

If only one of them is selected, the selectors may opt for a finisher-wicketkeeper for the final middle-order slot, with Jitesh Sharma considered a strong candidate after his recent performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Asia Cup Squad Announcement India – Bowling Combinations and Spin Options

Spin selection offers another major talking point. Kuldeep Yadav missed the T20I series against England early this year due to injury. His replacement, Varun Chakravarthy, topped the wicket charts with 14 wickets in five games and went on to feature in India’s Champions Trophy success in the UAE. The selectors could either pick both Kuldeep and Varun or choose one, depending on whether they want to sacrifice batting depth to accommodate two specialist spinners.

Pace Options and Lower-Middle Order Candidates

Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh should walk into the squad if fully fit. The race for third seamer is between Prasidh Krishna, the purple cap winner in IPL 2025, and Harshit Rana, who made a strong impression on debut against England.

Lower down the order, Shivam Dube, Riyan Parag and Rinku Singh are front-runners. Dube has remained a regular pick when fit and was CSK’s highest run-scorer in IPL 2025. Parag returns from injury and could be considered for his all-round ability. Rinku Singh may miss out if selectors prioritise someone capable of bowling. Other names like leg-spinning allrounder Vipraj Nigam and Ramandeep Singh are also in the mix after varied IPL performances.
