Air India Confirms 241 Dead in Ahmedabad Plane Crash; Only One Survivor Identified

Published on

Air India has confirmed that 241 individuals lost their lives after its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to London, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday. The aircraft was carrying a total of 242 people, including passengers and crew.

Details of Passengers and Nationalities

According to the airline, the passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 from the United Kingdom, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. The deceased also include several individuals who were on the ground at the time of the crash. Former Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP leader Vijay Rupani was also among those killed in the tragedy.

One Passenger Survives Catastrophic Crash

Air India identified the sole survivor of the crash as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. He is the only passenger to have lived through the horrific incident. Of the 242 on board, 230 were passengers while 12 were part of the crew — including two pilots and ten flight attendants.

Emergency Declared Moments After Takeoff

The aircraft departed at 1:39 PM, and within moments, the pilot issued a ‘Mayday’ distress call, indicating a severe emergency. The plane was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a seasoned pilot with over 8,200 hours of flying experience, along with First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flying hours.

Boeing Responds as Stock Takes a Hit

Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has expressed its condolences and stated that it is in contact with Air India to offer any necessary assistance. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner involved in the crash was delivered to Air India in 2014. Following the tragic news, Boeing’s shares dropped by more than 4 percent in trading yesterday.
