Panaji: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has outlined a three-year roadmap to make India drug-free by 2029, calling for a coordinated national campaign against narcotics.
Shah announced the roadmap while addressing a press conference in Goa during his three-day visit to the state. He said the government has strengthened enforcement, intelligence-sharing, financial investigations and rehabilitation measures since 2019.
According to Shah, more than 1.19 crore kilograms of drugs, valued at around Rs 1.89 lakh crore, were seized between 2014 and 2024. More than 48.66 lakh kilograms of drugs were also destroyed during the period.
India Drug-Free by 2029: Four-Pillar Strategy
Shah said the three-year campaign will be based on four key pillars.
These include intelligence- and operations-based enforcement, control of precursor and synthetic drugs, demand and harm reduction, and capacity building and coordination.
The approach combines action against drug trafficking networks with measures aimed at reducing demand and strengthening rehabilitation.
Government Sets Targets Against Drug Networks
Over the next three years, the government aims to dismantle 100 international and inter-state drug networks.
It also plans to bring 100 narcotics-related fugitives back to India and destroy 100 clandestine drug laboratories involved in illegal drug production.
The targets are part of the wider effort to strengthen coordination between agencies and disrupt the supply of narcotics.
Anti-Narcotics Campaign to Reach 50 Crore Citizens
The national campaign will aim to reach 50 crore citizens and create one lakh ‘Nasha Mukt Mitras’ to support awareness and the fight against drug abuse.
The government also plans to increase the number of de-addiction centres to 1,751 as part of its demand-reduction and rehabilitation efforts.
Shah said public participation and wider awareness would be important for the success of the campaign.
Goa Anti-Narcotics Task Force
During his Goa visit, Shah said the state has an Anti-Narcotics Task Force and called for public and media support for the national campaign.
The three-year roadmap places enforcement, prevention, rehabilitation and coordination at the centre of India’s target to become drug-free by 2029.
