Odisha Plans Single Board for Class 10 and 12 Exams

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is planning major changes to its school education system, including a proposal to merge the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) and the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) into a single board.

The proposed unified board would handle the curriculum and examinations for Classes 10 and 12, broadly following the structure of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The state government is also planning to revise the Class 10 curriculum as part of the wider education reforms.

Odisha BSE and CHSE Merger Plan

Preparations are underway to draft legislation for merging BSE and CHSE. The formal process of creating the proposed unified board will begin after the legislation comes into effect.

The developments were announced by School and Mass Education Secretary Dr N. Thirumala Naik during the 44th Foundation Day celebration of CHSE.

The proposed merger is aimed at bringing secondary and higher secondary education under a common board structure and streamlining curriculum and examinations for Classes 10 and 12.

Class 10 Curriculum to Be Revised

Along with the proposed board merger, the Odisha government is planning changes to the Class 10 curriculum.

The reforms are part of a broader effort to reorganise the state’s secondary and higher secondary education system and improve access to different learning options.

Odisha Plans Open Schooling and Free Digital Education

The state government is also planning to introduce Plus Two courses through open schooling.

Under the proposed open-school system, free education is expected to be provided to students up to the age of 18 years.

The CHSE has also reportedly been directed to facilitate free digital education, adding another learning option for students.

Plus Two Science and Commerce in Odia

Another important part of the proposed reforms is the expansion of mother-tongue education.

Students will be able to study Plus Two Science and Commerce in Odia. The move is intended to make higher secondary education more accessible to students who prefer learning in the regional language.

An Odia-language Science textbook has already been introduced this year, beginning in January. According to the School and Mass Education Department, textbooks for other subjects will gradually be made available in Odia as well.
