Srikakulam (Andhra Pradesh): A tragic stampede at the newly built Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga, Srikakulam district, claimed the lives of at least ten devotees on Saturday morning. Among the deceased are nine women and one child. Several others were injured, with some in critical condition, and the death toll may rise.
According to officials, thousands of devotees had gathered at the temple for darshan on the occasion of the first Ekadashi in the holy month of Karthika Masam. The temple, constructed just four months ago by a private trust, witnessed massive crowds when the railing collapsed, triggering a deadly rush.
Police and emergency teams quickly reached the scene, shifting the injured to nearby hospitals and bringing the situation under control.
Leaders Express Deep Grief Over Srikakulam Temple Stampede
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed profound grief over the loss of lives.
“The stampede incident at the Venkateswara Temple in Kasibugga has caused a shock. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. I have instructed officials to ensure speedy treatment for the injured and oversee relief operations,” he stated on X (formerly Twitter).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his condolences, announcing financial aid for victims’ families.
“Pained by the stampede in Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” the PMO said. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each from the PMNRF will be provided to the next of kin of the deceased.
President Droupadi Murmu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also conveyed their condolences and prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured.
Investigation Ordered into the Tragedy
Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident to determine whether safety protocols were followed during the large gathering. Police said crowd management lapses are being reviewed.
The tragic event has cast a shadow over the festive season, with devotees and residents of the region mourning the sudden loss of lives in what should have been a sacred occasion.
