New Delhi: The Bangladesh IPL broadcast ban debate intensified on Sunday after Information and Broadcasting Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said Dhaka is considering suspending the telecast of the Indian Premier League following the controversial exclusion of national team pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the tournament. The development comes at a time when bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh remain tense.
The remarks followed confirmation from Kolkata Knight Riders that Mustafizur had been released from their squad ahead of the IPL 2026 season on the instructions of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Bangladesh IPL Broadcast Ban Considered Over Mustafizur Exclusion
Speaking at a forum organised by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum, Hasan said the decision to drop Mustafizur from the KKR squad could not be justified. According to local media reports, she stated that if the exclusion had been purely on cricketing grounds, it would not have raised objections.
However, she described the reasoning behind the move as unacceptable, adding that the government felt compelled to respond. Hasan emphasised that the issue was being viewed seriously due to its broader political and diplomatic implications.
Legal Review Underway Before Any Decision on IPL Telecast
Hasan clarified that no immediate action had been taken so far and that the government was carefully examining the legal and procedural framework governing IPL broadcasts in Bangladesh. She said authorities must fully understand the contractual and regulatory aspects before moving forward.

“We need to review the legal framework and the processes involved before taking any steps. Only then will we decide on the appropriate response,” she said, underlining that any decision would be taken cautiously and within the bounds of the law.
SRK Row Fuels Political and Public Backlash
The controversy surrounding Mustafizur’s exit has been widely dubbed the SRK row due to the involvement of KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan. While KKR maintained that the signing and release followed IPL regulations, the move triggered sharp political and public reactions in India.
Critics linked the decision to diplomatic sensitivities and communal tensions involving Bangladesh, amplifying the debate beyond cricket and into the political arena.
Rising Communal Tensions Add to Diplomatic Strain
The situation has been further complicated by reports of fresh violence against members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh. In a recent incident, Bajendra Biswas, a Hindu worker, was shot dead while on duty at a garment factory in Mymensingh, marking the third such case in three weeks.
Analysts say these incidents have contributed to growing mistrust and have added pressure on Dhaka to respond firmly to issues perceived as unfair treatment of Bangladeshi interests. As discussions continue, the Bangladesh IPL broadcast ban remains under consideration, with its outcome likely to have significant implications for sports broadcasting and regional relations.
