BARGARH: In a tragic incident, a 13-year-old Bargarh girl attempted self-immolation at Phiringimal under Gaesilat police limits on Monday morning, leaving her in critical condition.
The victim, identified as Rashmi Seth, a Class 8 student of Saplahar Ashram School in Paikmal block, had visited her maternal uncle’s home over the weekend to meet her mother and celebrate Raksha Bandhan. Her father works as a migrant labourer, while her mother lives at her maternal home.
Bargarh girl self-immolation: How the incident unfolded
At around 7:30 am, Rashmi reportedly went to a nearby field, poured petrol over herself, and set herself on fire. Villagers, noticing the flames, rushed to the scene and managed to douse the fire, but she had already sustained severe burn injuries.
She collapsed unconscious on the spot. Locals alleged they faced a delay of over an hour in arranging an ambulance, forcing them to transport her to a private hospital themselves.
Rashmi is currently being shifted to Vikash Hospital in Bargarh for advanced treatment. The reason behind the suicide attempt remains unknown, and police have launched an investigation.
