Baripada Rath Yatra 2025: Deities Begin Divine Journey, Chariot Pulling on June 28 & 29

Published on

Baripada: Spiritual fervor gripped Baripada as the sacred Pahandi Bije of the divine quartet—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Sudarshan—was performed on Friday evening, marking the start of the Baripada Rath Yatra 2025. The air echoed with chants of “Jai Jagannath” and “Hari Bol,” accompanied by cymbals, conch shells, and devotional songs.

Unlike the Puri Rath Yatra, where the deities are taken out and their chariots pulled on the same day, Baripada observes a two-day tradition. The deities ascend their respective chariots on the first day, with the pulling ritual scheduled for June 28 and 29 along the grand Badadanda (main road) to the Mausi Maa temple.

A highlight of Baripada’s Rath Yatra is the special custom where only women devotees are permitted to pull Devi Subhadra’s chariot, adding a unique cultural and spiritual touch to the celebration.

Thousands gathered last night offering tulsi, lotus, aarti, and bhog to the deities, who were seated magnificently on their chariots. The enthusiasm carried into Saturday as pilgrims lined up for darshan early in the morning.

The Mayurbhanj district administration has deployed extensive arrangements for crowd management, safety, and smooth conduct of the festival, which will continue until July 8. Devotees from nearby towns and villages are flocking to Baripada to witness this deeply revered tradition, turning the city into a vibrant sea of devotion.
