Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project Under Review
Bhubaneswar: The proposed Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project, which has generated considerable interest among residents and stakeholders, is still in the planning phase, clarified Housing & Urban Development and Public Enterprises Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Saturday.
No Proposal Sent to Centre Yet
Dispelling speculation, Minister Mahapatra said, “We are actively working on the development of the Bhubaneswar Metro. However, no official proposal has been sent to the Centre as of now.” He added that the project is envisioned as a joint venture between the Odisha government and the Centre, and further consultations are underway.
Inter-Ministerial Committee Formed
The Minister informed that an inter-ministerial sub-committee has been set up to evaluate all aspects of the metro rail project, including technical feasibility, financial viability, and urban impact.
“This committee will provide essential recommendations that will guide our next steps. The project’s success depends heavily on central support, and we cannot proceed without it,” Mahapatra said.
Reevaluation Based on Public and Urban Needs
Minister Mahapatra emphasized that the current state government is reevaluating the metro project’s viability in terms of urban development goals and public benefit. He assured that appropriate steps would be taken based on the sub-committee’s findings to move the project forward responsibly.
The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project, if approved, is expected to significantly improve the city’s urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and support the Smart City vision of Odisha’s capital.
