Bhubaneswar Police Bust Major Illegal Arms Racket, Arrest 5 Traffickers

Published on

In a major crackdown on illegal arms smuggling, the Commissionerate Police have foiled a plan to distribute automatic pistols and revolvers across Bhubaneswar to fuel crimes like robbery, extortion, and violence.

The operation was spearheaded by the Air Field Police Station under Bhubaneswar UPD, culminating in a surprise raid in Jatani Gate Bazar that led to the arrest of five accused and the seizure of a significant cache of firearms.

Accused Identified from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha

The five arrested individuals are:

  • Praveen Kumar Singh (40), Ratsar village, Ballia, UP
  • Abhishek Rajput (31), Bahadurpur, UP
  • Indrajit Singh (38), Meuli village, UP
  • Raghavendra Singh (28), Bhind district, MP
  • SK Sakil (28), Salepur, Cuttack district, Odisha

They were caught red-handed in Pokhariput while attempting to sell firearms from a suspicious vehicle (Reg. GJ-27-DM-5196).

Firearms, Ammo, and Equipment Seized

During the raid, police seized:

  • Four 7.65mm semi-automatic pistols
  • One six-round revolver
  • One single-shot firearm
  • 18 rounds of live ammunition
  • One vehicle and five mobile phones

Interstate Trafficking Link with Bihar and Uttar Pradesh

Police investigations reveal that the gang had been smuggling weapons from UP and Bihar into Odisha.
Praveen Kumar Singh, the main dealer, had been staying in Bhubaneswar for the last two months and was operating from Jatani Gate. His team was reportedly in active discussions to sell the firearms to local criminals when apprehended.

SK Sakil is believed to be the mastermind, linking the group to local buyers and overseeing the transaction network.

Police Commissioner Dr. S. Dev Datta Singh, along with Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena, IPS, addressed the press, stating:

“This operation marks a significant breakthrough in halting the spread of illegal weapons in Odisha. Our swift response based on credible intelligence prevented a major threat to public safety.”

Authorities are now tracing the supply chain and past criminal records of the accused to disrupt further arms inflow into the state.
