Air India Crash in Ahmedabad: Black Box Recovered, Investigation Underway

Published on

The black box of the ill-fated Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, has been recovered. The digital flight data recorder (DFDR) was located on the roof of a doctors’ hostel building struck by the aircraft.

AAIB, Gujarat Teams Lead Search and Recovery Operation

The recovery was led by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) with the support of over 40 personnel from the Gujarat government. The black box is considered a critical component in aviation investigations as it captures essential flight data.

What the Black Box Reveals?

Despite its name, the black box is typically bright orange to aid visibility. Built to withstand explosions, impact, and deep-sea conditions, it houses two core units:

  • The Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR)
  • The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR)

These record parameters such as altitude, airspeed, engine performance, and cockpit communication, including pilot-to-ATC exchanges.

Investigation Begins with Global Team

The crashed aircraft was en route from Ahmedabad to London, carrying 242 passengers. Tragically, only one survivor, a British national of Indian origin, has been reported.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrashekhar confirmed that investigative teams from India, the UK, and the US have arrived at the crash site within 24 hours.

CCTV Footage Sheds Light on Final Moments

CCTV footage from the Ahmedabad airport showed the Dreamliner taking off normally. But seconds later, it appeared to struggle with altitude. Instead of climbing, the aircraft flew level briefly before rapidly losing height, crashing into the doctors’ hostel near the runway’s end.

The aircraft, which had served for 12 years, was considered one of the most reliable long-haul jets in the world.
