Cabinet Approves ₹1,507 Crore Greenfield Airport Kota Bundi to Boost Connectivity and Growth

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) proposal to develop a new greenfield airport in Kota-Bundi, Rajasthan. With an estimated cost of ₹1,507 crore, the project aims to significantly improve air connectivity to the region, which is known as both the industrial capital of Rajasthan and a leading educational hub attracting students from across the country.

According to an official release by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the government of Rajasthan has already provided 440.06 hectares of land to AAI for development of the airport.

Greenfield Airport Kota Bundi – Project Features and Capacity

The proposed Greenfield airport Kota Bundi will be designed to accommodate A-321 type aircraft and will include a terminal building covering 20,000 square meters. The terminal will be built to handle 1,000 peak-hour passengers, providing an annual capacity of up to two million passengers. The airport will feature a 3,200m x 45m runway (11/29), seven parking bays for A-321 aircraft, two link taxiways and supporting infrastructure such as an ATC tower, technical block, fire station and spacious car parking facilities.

Why the New Greenfield Airport Is Needed

The existing airport in Kota has limited facilities, with a runway measuring just 1,220m x 38m that can handle only smaller Code ‘B’ aircraft such as the Dornier DO-228. The current terminal building is only 400 square meters in size and can manage just 50 passengers during peak hours. Because of restricted land availability and urban development around the present site, there is no scope for expansion to accommodate larger aircraft or commercial flight operations.

With Cabinet approval secured and land already transferred to the Airports Authority of India, the next phase of the project will focus on detailed planning, procurement, and construction. The airport is expected to enhance connectivity to major Indian cities, contributing to the broader goal of improving regional air infrastructure under the government’s UDAN initiative.
