CBDT Extends ITR Filing Deadline for AY 2025-26 to December 10
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) under the Ministry of Finance has officially extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the Assessment Year 2025-26. The earlier deadline of October 31, 2025, has now been pushed to December 10, 2025, offering relief to taxpayers and professionals managing year-end filings.
CBDT Extends ITR Filing Deadline for AY 2025-26
According to the official press release issued on October 29, 2025, the CBDT extends ITR filing deadline under Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, for assessees falling under clause (a) of Explanation 2 to sub-section (1). These include individuals and entities whose accounts are subject to audit under the Income-tax Act or any other law.
New Date for Tax Audit Report Submission Announced
In addition to the extension of the ITR filing date, the CBDT extends ITR filing deadline for submitting the audit report for the financial year 2024-25. Originally due on September 30, 2025, the audit report deadline was first extended to October 31, 2025, and is now further extended to November 10, 2025.
Relief for Taxpayers and Professionals
This decision provides significant relief to chartered accountants, tax practitioners, and taxpayers who faced challenges in meeting the previous deadlines. The extension ensures that all audit and filing requirements can be completed without undue pressure, particularly for those managing large-scale financial operations.
Official Notification to Follow Soon
The CBDT confirmed that a formal order or notification will be issued separately to make the extension official under the Income-tax Act, 1961. The announcement was made by V. Rajitha, Commissioner of Income Tax (Media & Technical Policy) and the official spokesperson of the CBDT.
