A sombre atmosphere gripped Alipura village in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district after reports emerged of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei amid the ongoing US–Israel conflict. Residents of the predominantly Shia village gathered for special prayers and announced a three-day mourning period as a mark of respect.
The mourning will continue until Tuesday.
Village with long-standing ties to Iran
Located about 70 kilometres from Bengaluru, Alipura has historically maintained close links with Iran. Community members recalled that Khamenei visited the village in 1986 at the invitation of local leaders.
Villagers say that visit strengthened emotional and cultural ties between the community and Iran, bonds that have endured for nearly four decades.
Prayers and emotional tributes
On Sunday, residents assembled for collective prayers, with many visibly emotional. For the community, Khamenei was not only a global religious figure but someone they felt personally connected to through shared history.
A local hospital named in his honour stands as a symbol of that connection, reflecting the village’s long association with Iran’s religious leadership.
