Congress, BJP Clash Over NCERT’s New Partition Module As History Row Intensifies

Published on

The political battle between the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified on Saturday after the NCERT rolled out its new NCERT Partition module, sparking fresh debate over the portrayal of India’s independence and the events leading up to Partition.

Congress leader Pawan Khera strongly refuted the claims made in the module, arguing that the real responsibility for India’s division lies with the collaboration between the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League.

In a scathing attack, Khera stated that if the module fails to mention these facts, it should be “set on fire”. He added that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) played a role in espionage during that time and therefore cannot be exonerated by historical revisions.

He further reminded that L.K. Advani once visited Jinnah’s mausoleum, alleging hypocrisy and an attempt to distort history for political convenience.

Responding to Congress’ objections, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla maintained that the Congress cannot escape its role in Partition. “The Muslim League and Congress led by Jawaharlal Nehru were in command when the country was divided. It is on record that wrong decisions driven by appeasement and the greed of power led to the tragedy which displaced crores and resulted in mass violence,” he said.
He accused the Congress of refusing to confront uncomfortable facts and repeating “historic mistakes” for political gain.

NCERT’s module emphasizes that although Muhammad Ali Jinnah demanded the creation of Pakistan, Congress agreed to the plan and failed to recognize its long-term consequences. The module also states that hasty decisions were made due to inexperience in governance.

The controversy comes just after NCERT removed references to the Mughals and Delhi Sultanate from Class VII history lessons and re-characterized Babur in Class VIII content. Additionally, Assam has witnessed backlash over NCERT’s claim that the Ahoms migrated from Myanmar, contradicting several historic accounts linking the dynasty’s origin to China.
