Cyclone Ditwah Live Updates: IMD Warns of November 30 Landfall Heavy Rainfall in Tamil Nadu
Cyclone Ditwah live updates: Cyclone Ditwah continued to intensify over Sri Lanka and the southwest Bay of Bengal, prompting a fresh alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The severe weather system has already caused widespread devastation in Sri Lanka, where over 80 people have died and more than 30 remain missing due to floods and landslides triggered by the storm. As the system inches toward India’s coastline, authorities have heightened preparedness across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Strong landfall possibility rises: Cyclone Ditwah live updates from IMD
The IMD confirmed that Cyclone Ditwah is expected to cross the north Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coast in the early hours of November 30. Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology at IMD, said the storm is currently located near the coastal belt of Sri Lanka and adjacent southwest Bay of Bengal, around 480 km south of Chennai, moving in a north-northwest direction.
He noted that the cyclone will move out from Sri Lanka into the Bay of Bengal by November 29 morning followed by a slight intensification. The system will then continue its trajectory toward the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coastline, bringing strong winds and intense rainfall.
Heavy rainfall warnings: Cyclone Ditwah live updates for Tamil Nadu and Andhra
The IMD has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the southern and Cauvery delta districts of Tamil Nadu between November 29 and 30. As the cyclone nears landfall, rainfall intensity is expected to increase significantly along the state’s coastline.
A red alert has been issued for Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu and Puducherry, owing to the possibility of extremely heavy rains. The weather office also warned of urban flooding, localised inundation and potential flash floods in hilly regions.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema are also likely to witness light to moderate rainfall at many locations. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on Saturday and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated parts on Sunday.
Sri Lanka devastation grows as India sends humanitarian assistance
Cyclone Ditwah has wreaked havoc across Sri Lanka, resulting in severe damage, landslides and widespread flooding. According to PTI, more than 80 people have lost their lives and over 30 individuals are unaccounted for.
In response, India has expanded aid under Operation Sagar Bandhu. An Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft carrying nearly 12 tonnes of relief material, including tents, tarpaulins, blankets, hygiene essentials and ready-to-eat food, reached Colombo on Saturday. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar confirmed the development, adding that India will continue providing all possible support.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the affected families and assured further assistance if required.
States prepare: Exam postponements, red alerts and emergency measures
As Cyclone Ditwah draws closer to the Tamil Nadu – Puducherry coast, several precautionary steps are being taken. Pondicherry Central University has postponed all examinations scheduled for Saturday and declared a holiday for all classes. Revised exam dates will be announced later.
Authorities across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Telangana are on high alert due to the risk of heavy rains, strong winds and potential waterlogging. Disaster response teams have been positioned along the vulnerable coastline, while fishermen have been advised to stay away from the sea until further notice.
According to the latest IMD update issued at 5:30 AM, Cyclone Ditwah was centred over coastal Sri Lanka and moving north-northwest at 8 kmph. The storm is very likely to shift toward the southwest Bay of Bengal near Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh by early morning on November 30.
