Cyclone Montha Nears East Coast: Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu on High Alert
The coastal states of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu have been placed on high alert as Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Bay of Bengal and moves toward India’s eastern shoreline. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the developing cyclonic storm is expected to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, with wind speeds estimated between 90 and 100 kmph. The weather system is predicted to impact coastal regions early next week, prompting emergency measures across multiple states.
Cyclone Montha Prompts States to Enhance Preparedness
In anticipation of Cyclone Montha, authorities in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu have activated disaster management protocols. Coastal districts are witnessing rapid preparations, including evacuation planning, stockpiling of relief materials, and reinforcement of embankments. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea until October 29, as conditions are expected to worsen with rough tides and high winds.
NCMC Reviews Situation as Cyclone Montha Intensifies
On Saturday, Cabinet Secretary Dr. T. V. Somanathan chaired a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) to assess the country’s readiness for the approaching storm. The Chief Secretaries of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry, along with the Additional Chief Secretary of Odisha, provided updates on the measures being implemented at the state level. The NCMC emphasized the importance of coordination among all agencies to ensure timely evacuation and minimize potential damage.
NDRF and SDRF Teams Deployed Along the Eastern Coast
To mitigate risks associated with Cyclone Montha, both National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been stationed in vulnerable regions. District Control Rooms have been activated and are continuously monitoring the evolving weather conditions. Power utilities, road maintenance teams, and healthcare units have been instructed to remain on alert for emergency operations.
IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds
Meteorological forecasts indicate that Cyclone Montha will continue to gather strength before making landfall. Coastal regions in northern Tamil Nadu, southern Andhra Pradesh, and southern Odisha are likely to experience torrential rains accompanied by strong gusts of wind.
