Cyclone Montha: Odisha Schools and Colleges Closed on October 28 and 29

Published on

Cyclone Montha: As Cyclone Montha moves closer to the eastern coast, the Odisha government has declared holidays for all schools, colleges, and educational institutions in several districts on October 28 and 29, 2025. The decision was made as a safety measure to protect students, teachers, and staff amid forecasts of heavy rainfall and high-speed winds.

Odisha school holidays Cyclone Montha: Districts under red alert

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Montha is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28 and make landfall along the Andhra-Odisha coast. Eight districts have been placed under the Red Zone alert due to the high risk of impact. These districts include Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi.

Educational institutions to remain closed for two days

All schools and colleges in the affected districts will remain closed on October 28 and 29. Authorities have urged parents and students to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall. The School and Mass Education Department has instructed district collectors to follow strict safety measures, suspend physical classes, and conduct structural safety checks of educational buildings. Some schools may also be used as temporary shelters if required.

State administration and NDRF on high alert

The Odisha Disaster Response Force (ODRF), NDRF teams, and local administrations are on standby. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea, and residents in coastal and low-lying areas are being relocated to safer cyclone shelters. Power and telecommunication departments have been directed to keep emergency backup systems ready in case of service disruptions.

Precautionary measures intensified across coastal districts

Odisha’s administration is coordinating with weather agencies and local bodies to ensure minimal damage and prompt rescue operations. The state government has also urged citizens to stay updated through official advisories and avoid spreading unverified information about Cyclone Montha.
