Bhubaneswar: Five districts of Odisha have been placed under an orange warning for November 3 as Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu moves towards the south Andhra Pradesh coast, raising the possibility of heavy rainfall across parts of the state.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday.

Rain has already been reported in several parts of southern Odisha under the influence of the weather system. The IMD has also issued a yellow warning for 19 districts on Monday, November 2.

Five Districts Under Orange Warning on November 3

The five districts placed under the orange warning are:

  • Ganjam
  • Gajapati
  • Rayagada
  • Koraput
  • Malkangiri

A yellow warning has also been issued for Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha and Cuttack for November 3.

The weather department has warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in several parts of Odisha. Rainfall activity is expected to remain significant as the cyclone moves closer to the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Yellow Warning for 19 Districts on Monday

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in 19 districts on November 2.

Ganjam and Gajapati are likely to receive heavy rainfall, while other districts may experience rain and thunderstorm activity.

The weather situation is being closely monitored as the state prepares for increased rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Cyclone Murasu Likely to Cross Andhra Coast Tonight

According to the IMD’s November 2 coastal weather bulletin, Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu was centred over the west-central Bay of Bengal at 8.30 am, approximately 160 km east-southeast of Nellore and 210 km southeast of Ongole.

The storm was moving west-northwestwards at around 22 kmph.

It is very likely to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur, south of Ongole, between 11.30 pm on November 2 and 4 am on November 3.

At the time of landfall, wind speeds are expected to reach 100-110 kmph, with gusts up to 120 kmph.

Although Odisha is not expected to face a direct landfall, several districts are likely to experience rainfall and strong winds under the influence of the cyclone.

Odisha Administration Steps Up Preparedness

The Odisha government has strengthened precautionary measures as southern districts prepare for another spell of heavy rain following the recent impact of Cyclone Arnab.

District administrations have been asked to remain alert and monitor vulnerable locations, particularly low-lying areas and landslide-prone zones.

The fresh spell of rainfall could increase the risk of waterlogging, local flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Residents in the affected districts have been advised to follow official weather updates and instructions issued by local administrations.
