Amaravati: Cyclone Murasu, which has intensified over the Bay of Bengal, is likely to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur on the morning of November 3, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned.
The weather system is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal before making landfall. The IMD has forecast wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph, during the landfall process.
The latest development comes just days after Cyclone Arnab affected Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, raising concerns about another round of severe weather along the eastern coast.
Cyclone Murasu Intensifies Over Bay of Bengal
According to the IMD, the deep depression over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclone Murasu on November 1.
The system was moving west-northwestwards and was located over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal in the latest bulletin.
The weather department expects it to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal on November 2.
It is then likely to move towards the south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross between Nellore and Narsapur by the morning of November 3.
Wind Speed May Reach 120 Kmph
The IMD has warned that the cyclone could bring sustained winds of 100-110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph, along the landfall region.
Such strong winds may damage weak structures, uproot trees, disrupt electricity and communication services and affect road and transport operations.
Rough to very rough sea conditions are also expected over parts of the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen and people involved in marine activities have been advised to follow official weather warnings and avoid venturing into unsafe sea areas.
Heavy Rainfall Warning for Andhra Pradesh
The approaching cyclone is expected to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.
The IMD has warned of intense rainfall activity on November 2 and 3. Several districts could experience waterlogging, disruption to normal life and difficulties in transport.
Local administrations are monitoring the situation and are expected to take precautionary measures in vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas.
Odisha May Receive Heavy Rain on November 3 and 4
The cyclone’s influence is also expected to extend to Odisha.
According to the IMD forecast, isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha on November 3 and 4. The state weather authorities are monitoring the system as it moves towards the Andhra Pradesh coast.
The Odisha government has also stepped up preparedness in the southern parts of the state, with attention on vulnerable and low-lying areas.
Residents are advised to follow updates from the IMD and district administrations rather than relying on unverified weather information.
Authorities Monitor Situation After Cyclone Arnab
The approaching system has raised concerns because parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are still dealing with the impact of Cyclone Arnab, which affected the region in late October.
The latest cyclone forecast makes preparedness, timely warnings and coordination among disaster management agencies important.
Residents in coastal areas should secure loose objects, stay away from vulnerable structures during strong winds and follow evacuation instructions issued by local authorities.
