Cyclone Shakti Forms Over Bay of Bengal; Odisha and West Bengal on Alert

Published on

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the southwest monsoon has progressed into parts of the south Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and certain areas of the north Andaman Sea. The IMD also indicated the potential development of a low-pressure area between May 16 and 22.

Favorable conditions are expected to support the continued advance of the southwest monsoon into parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin region, the Bay of Bengal, and across the entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16–17.

In a bulletin issued on May 13, the IMD reported the presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea, extending from 1.5 km to 7.6 km above sea level and tilting southwestward with altitude.

Should the cyclone form, current projections suggest it could make landfall between May 24 and 26, with coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal identified as potentially vulnerable.

The IMD also noted cyclonic circulations over northwest Uttar Pradesh and west Rajasthan at lower levels of the atmosphere, which may bring rain and thunderstorms to nearby regions.

Moderate, fairly widespread rainfall is expected across Northeast India through May 17. Isolated moderate showers are also predicted in Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until May 17.

Additionally, scattered rain is likely in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, and Jharkhand during the same period. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands may experience isolated heavy rainfall until May 16.

Heatwave Conditions:

Heatwave conditions are expected in isolated areas of Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand on May 14 and 15, Uttar Pradesh through May 19, and West Rajasthan from May 15 to 17.
