Share Market Today: Sensex gains 182 pts, Nifty above 24,650 amid volatility

Published on

The Indian stock market ended on a positive note on Wednesday, May 14, supported by encouraging global signals amid a decline in geopolitical tensions. The Sensex gained 182 points (0.22%) to settle at 81,330.56, while the Nifty 50 climbed 89 points (0.36%) to close at 24,666.90.

Mid and small-cap stocks continued to outperform. The BSE Midcap Index rose 1.19%, and the Smallcap Index advanced 1.63%. Meanwhile, market volatility eased, with the India VIX falling over 5% to 17.23.

Investors saw significant gains during the session, with the combined market capitalization of BSE-listed companies increasing by around ₹4 lakh crore, from ₹431 lakh crore to nearly ₹435 lakh crore.

The improvement in investor sentiment has been attributed to the cooling of the US-China trade tensions, reduced India-Pakistan hostilities, and falling inflation levels. Additionally, stock-specific movements driven by ongoing Q4 earnings announcements have contributed to the market momentum.

Key contributors to the Sensex rally included Infosys, Reliance Industries, and Tata Steel, while HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank emerged as the biggest drags.

Top Nifty 50 Gainers:

  • Tata Steel: +3.93%
  • Shriram Finance: +2.75%
  • Bharat Electronics (BEL): +2.61%

Top Nifty 50 Losers:

  • Asian Paints: -1.66%
  • Cipla: -1.33%
  • Kotak Mahindra Bank: -1.12%

In intraday trade on the BSE, 88 stocks hit 52-week highs, including BEL, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, APL Apollo Tubes, Bharti Hexacom, Dalmia Bharat, Max Financial Services, and Solar Industries India.

Conversely, 30 stocks touched their 52-week lows, with Aether Industries and Last Mile Enterprises among them.
