New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday ordered a probe against a Junior Engineer (JE) and announced ₹5 lakh financial assistance to animal welfare activist Jagriti Mishra after her under-construction animal shelter was demolished.
The Chief Minister personally met Jagriti Mishra and assured her of complete support. She directed officials to conduct a thorough inquiry into the conduct of the Junior Engineer involved in the demolition and instructed the police to register a case against those responsible for threatening and harassing the activist.
What Happened?
Jagriti Mishra, who runs Street World Trust and works for the care of stray and injured animals, was constructing an animal shelter and gaushala on her own land in outer Delhi. The project, estimated to cost around ₹70 lakh, was funded through public donations.
According to Mishra, a person allegedly linked to a local AAP councillor had demanded a bribe a few days before the demolition. When she refused, she was threatened. Later, Municipal Corporation Junior Engineer Vikas Gupta ordered the bulldozing of the under-construction structure and boundary wall without serving any legal notice or showing official documents, she alleged.
Videos of the demolition and her allegations had gone viral on social media, following which the matter gained widespread attention.
Delhi CM’s Action
After meeting Jagriti Mishra, CM Rekha Gupta said:
- An inquiry has been ordered into the Junior Engineer’s conduct.
- Police have been directed to register a case against those responsible for the threats and harassment.
- The District Magistrate has been instructed to assist Mishra in setting up the animal shelter.
- ₹5 lakh will be provided from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The Chief Minister clearly stated that her government will not tolerate harassment of citizens or misuse of official authority. “Those found guilty will face strict action under the law,” she said.
AAP has denied any involvement of its councillor in the matter and claimed that the party’s name was unnecessarily dragged into the controversy.
The development comes as a strong message from the Delhi government against alleged high-handedness by local officials in the case of a genuine animal welfare initiative.
