Despite Price Surge, Gold Sales Sparkle on Dhanteras in Odisha
Bhubaneswar: Even with prices touching record highs, gold sales in Odisha on Dhanteras remained strong as eager buyers crowded jewellery outlets across Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The festive spirit overshadowed concerns over steep prices, with the wedding season just around the corner further fueling the demand.
Gold Sales in Odisha on Dhanteras Remain Robust Despite High Prices
On Saturday, 10 grams of 22-carat gold retailed at Rs 1,19,950, while 24-carat gold stood at Rs 1,30,860. Despite the surge, sales activity remained brisk. Jewellers reported that most buyers opted for lightweight ornaments suitable for festive and wedding wear. Compared to last year’s Dhanteras, when 22-carat gold was priced at Rs 73,750 and 24-carat at Rs 80,450, this year’s prices reflect a sharp increase.
Jewellers Record High Footfall in Twin City Outlets
Jewellery stores across the Twin City witnessed a heavy rush of customers throughout the day. Large and small jewellers alike reported healthy sales figures as families flocked to make auspicious purchases. Sourav Roy, secretary of the Odisha Jewellers’ Association, said, “We expected a strong turnout despite the high rates. Buyers know prices will only rise further, so they are investing now.”
Gold Prices See Sharp Jump Over the Years
Data from jewellers show a consistent rise in gold prices in the past three years. In 2023, 10 grams of 22-carat gold cost Rs 56,000, and 24-carat was Rs 61,700. The 2025 Dhanteras prices reflect nearly a 115% increase over two years. However, the demand remains largely unaffected, as consumers view gold as both a traditional and financial investment.
Shift Toward Lightweight Jewellery Designs
The trend this year shows buyers preferring lightweight jewellery pieces due to soaring gold prices. “Heavy and elaborate designs are being replaced by sleek, modern styles to suit budget-conscious customers,” said Roy. Designers have also adapted their offerings to meet evolving preferences while maintaining festive aesthetics.
As Odisha glittered with gold purchases this Dhanteras, the sentiment among jewellers was upbeat. Despite steep costs, the age-old belief in the auspiciousness of buying gold on this day continues to shine brighter than ever.
