Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked ten years of the Digital India initiative by celebrating its transformation from a government programme into a people-powered movement. In a blog post commemorating the milestone, he emphasized how Digital India is central to building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and establishing the country as a trusted innovation partner to the world.
From “India-First” to “India-for-the-World”
Highlighting India’s digital transformation, PM Modi wrote that the country is now moving from digital governance to global digital leadership, reflecting a shift in global perception.
“Decades were spent doubting Indians’ ability to use technology. Today, that mindset has changed,” he said, adding that technology is now being used to bridge inequality rather than deepen it.
Inclusive Innovation at the Core
The Prime Minister stressed that the inclusive design of Digital India has empowered those on the margins.
“When intent is right, innovation empowers the less empowered,” he said, noting that the mission was founded on democratizing access, building inclusive infrastructure, and creating equal opportunities.
Unprecedented Infrastructure and Connectivity
- Over 42 lakh km of Optical Fibre Cable now connects even the most remote villages, equivalent to 11 times the distance between Earth and the Moon.
- India’s 5G rollout is among the fastest in the world, with 4.81 lakh base stations installed in just two years.
- High-speed internet has reached urban centres, border areas, and forward military posts, including Galwan, Siachen, and Ladakh.
Global Impact of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)
PM Modi highlighted the success and global recognition of India’s DPI platforms:
- Aadhaar, DigiLocker, CoWIN, FASTag, PM-WANI, and One Nation One Subscription are now benchmarks for global digital solutions.
- CoWIN supported the world’s largest vaccination campaign, generating over 220 crore QR-based certificates.
- DigiLocker serves 54 crore users and stores over 775 crore documents.
Startups, AI, and India’s Tech Renaissance
India has emerged as a global leader in the startup space with:
- 1.8 lakh+ startups, placing it among the top three startup ecosystems worldwide.
- A fast-growing talent base in Artificial Intelligence, driven by high AI skill concentration among Indian youth.
PM Modi described this as not just a startup movement, but a “tech renaissance”.
India: The Most Affordable Compute Destination
- Through the $1.2 billion India AI Mission, access to 34,000 GPUs has been enabled at rates less than $1 per GPU hour, making India the most cost-effective compute destination globally.
- The New Delhi Declaration on AI advocates for humanity-first innovation, balancing progress with responsibility.
Looking Ahead: A Transformative Decade
PM Modi concluded with optimism, calling the next decade even more transformative for India’s digital journey.
He reaffirmed that Digital India will continue to be a global model of inclusion, innovation, and impact.
