ECI Rejects Rahul Gandhi’s Allegations of Mass Voter Deletion

Published on

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has strongly refuted allegations made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who claimed that a centralised software was being used for the “mass deletion” of voters’ names across several states.

Dismissing the charges as “incorrect and baseless,” the ECI clarified that no vote deletion can be carried out online by any member of the public. The Commission further underlined that no voter can be removed from the rolls without being given a chance to be heard.

Election Commission denies claims of mass voter deletion

Responding to Gandhi’s press conference remarks, the poll body said unsuccessful attempts were made to delete electors in Karnataka’s Aland constituency during 2023. The Commission itself filed an FIR to probe the irregularities and ensure accountability.

The ECI posted an official rebuttal on social media platform X, stating:

Rahul Gandhi accuses CEC of shielding ‘vote chors’

Despite the clarification, Gandhi intensified his criticism of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of protecting those who undermined democracy.
“I am going to make a serious claim about Gyanesh Kumar… The CEC is protecting vote chors and the people who have destroyed Indian democracy,” the Congress leader declared at his Delhi press briefing.

He demanded that the Commission hand over all evidence related to alleged irregularities to the Karnataka CID within a week, warning that the credibility of the electoral system was at stake.

Examples cited from Karnataka and Maharashtra constituencies

In support of his claims, Gandhi highlighted alleged irregularities in Aland, Karnataka. He asserted that 6,018 deletion applications were filed fraudulently in 2023, using impersonated voter details. He presented both a voter whose name was targeted for deletion and the individual whose identity was misused, both of whom denied any involvement.

Additionally, Gandhi referred to Maharashtra’s Rajura constituency, alleging fraudulent voter additions through automated software, further fuelling his claim of a “systematic conspiracy.”

ECI insists mass voter deletion allegations are baseless

The poll body has maintained that the mass voter deletion allegations are unfounded and part of misinformation. It reiterated that safeguards are in place to ensure transparency and due process in all voter list revisions. Officials also stressed that technology is being used only to streamline electoral processes, not to manipulate them.
