Election Commission De-Lists 474 Political Parties for Failing to Contest Elections

Published on

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has de-listed 474 registered unrecognised political parties (RUPPs) for failing to meet mandatory requirements. These parties did not contest a single election for six consecutive years since 2019, leading to their removal.

This move follows a similar exercise last month when 334 parties were de-listed, bringing the total number of political parties removed in the last two months to 808.

Failure to Submit Financial Records

Apart from contesting elections, the Commission also found serious lapses in financial transparency. According to the ECI, 359 political parties have failed to submit their Annual Audited Accounts for the last three financial years within the stipulated time.

These parties belong to 23 States and Union Territories across India.

Show-Cause Notices Issued

To ensure fairness, the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of respective States and UTs have been instructed to issue show-cause notices to these parties. They will also be given a chance to present their case through hearings before the CEOs submit their final reports.

The Election Commission will take the final decision on delisting after reviewing the reports and recommendations from the CEOs.

This strict action by the ECI highlights its effort to ensure that only active and transparent political parties remain registered. It aims to strengthen accountability and prevent misuse of registration benefits by inactive parties.
